DeSmogger "Caught" in Climategate Emails

The heretofore anonymous blogger Tom Nelson REVEALED today that even the DeSmogBlog has been caught in the talons of the DenierMobsters who are responsible for stealing the Climategate emails (two years ago) and retreading the bumptious "scandal" this year.

The (partial) quote now making the rounds (see also Mark Morano's fantasymill at Climate Depot), is from an email I sent to Michael Mann in 2007. It goes like this:

I'm a DeSmogBlog writer [Richard LIttlemore] (I got your email from Kevin Grandia) and I am trying to fend off the latest announcement that global warming has not actually occurred in the 20th century.

It looks to me like Gerd Burger is trying to deny climate change by "smoothing," "correcting" or otherwise rounding off the temperatures that we know for a flat fact have been recorded since the 1970s, but I am out of my depth (as I am sure you have noticed: we're all about PR here, not much about science) so I wonder if you guys have done anything or are going to do anything with Burger's intervention in Science.

I'd like to confirm that this quote is accurate - that Gerd Burger WAS playing fast and loose with his analysis, that I am NOT a scientist and that, accordingly, I check my facts with people who are reputable, knowledgeable and widely respected in the scientific community (thank you Mike).

I'd also like to say that getting so fleeting a mention in the Climategate emails ranks down there with the deepest-discount cheap thrills. I cherish the moment … seriously. (Okay, not.)

Emails: The "decline" comes out of hiding

For people who really want to understand the details of the emails stolen from the Climatic Research Unit at the University of East Anglia, the Christian Science Monitor has an excellent analysis of the tree ring "divergence" phenomenon that gave rise to the now-infamous line: “I’ve just completed Mike’s Nature trick of adding in the real temps to each series for the last 20 years (ie from 1981 onwards) amd from 1961 for Keith’s to hide the decline.” <!--break-->

COP15 Boycotts Sarah Palin – Fox News Still Can't Count – Climate Change Still Exists

COP15 - the whole world is watchingShortly after I arrived on the ground here in Copenhagen, I heard reports from back home that erstwhile vice-presidential candidate and early-retiring Alaska governor Sarah Palin was urging president Barack Obama to "boycott" the COP15 climate talks in the wake of stolen emails from climate scientists and East Anglia University and the apparently heavily-funded and obviously conveniently timed effort to characterize the content of those emails as "proof" that the entire body of climate science is suspect.

The call for Obama's boycott of the talks came as news of a well-orchestrated international campaign to harass scientists and attempt to create a "scandal" came to light, pushing deep into Big Tobacco territory of sowing doubt and confusion. Confusion exemplified by Fox News when they purport a poll showing 120% of Americans believe that climate scientists fudge their data by… fudging their data.

Perhaps both Palin and Fox need a quick refresher in history. "Climategate" refers, of course, to Watergate, in which the real scandal was not what was found in the files, but by the fact they were stolen – and forces behind the illegal act.

The emails in question relate only to the IPCC's Fourth Assessment Report, a process where 2500 scientists review, in two separate  rounds, and synthesize all current peer-reviewed research into an overall assessment, placing all comments in the public domain. The trend suggested in the first through third reports remain consistent in the fourth. But more importantly, the trend in the real world – which cares little of anyone's email – continues to reveal increasingly rapid climate change.

Unable to legitimately refute the science and empirical evidence after years of repeated attempts, their hand is continually overplayed, leading to a manufactured "scandal" that will blow up in their face.

Sarah Palin thinks President Obama should boycott COP15? Too late.

COP15 – represented by a global community reflected in the numerous languages that fill the air as I write this (something that might make Palin a bit uneasy) – rejects the real scandal and the methods of those that promote it.

Stolen CRU emails: Who are the criminals behind the conspiracy theorists?

Former Republican strategist Marc Morano is having as much fun with the stolen emails from the Climate Research Unit that he did with the Swift Boat Veteran's for Truth attack he led against John Kerry in the 2004 presidential election.

Morano and his site Climate Depot has become the climate conspiracy hub since this story broke on late Thursday.

This cabal of climate deniers seems to think that 12 year-old emails between climate scientists somehow refutes the thousands of research papers produced over decades by thousands of researchers at some of the best scientific institutions in the world.

While Morano is the master of right-wing spin and is using these emails for his political agenda, the bigger question here is:

Who stole all this private data from the University in the first place?

<!--break-->The folder of information contains over 3,800 separate files and it is clear that someone has taken a lot of time to pull together what they thought would be the most damaging. This is not the work of a hacker, unless that hacker is extremely well-versed in climate science, and specifically the conspiracy theories of the climate denial movement.

This package of stolen data and emails would have taken hundreds of hours to compile and someone out there knows exactly how all this went down.

Terry Hurlbut at the Examiner has a time line of the stolen data going public which is a good start. I am sure one of our intrepid readers will get to the bottom of this. Tell you what. I'll race you.
